The Georgia Volleyball Coaches Association named senior Avery Thomson as a member of the Class 1A/2A Private All-State Volleyball Team. Thomson is the first MDS volleyball athlete to receive this distinction since the Academy joined the GHSA. In addition, she has been selected to compete in a senior all-star game Saturday, November 10 at Providence Christian Academy in Lilburn.
Thomson is a 4-year varsity player and the longest standing member of the Lady Cavaliers volleyball team. Her stats for the 2018 season are impressive with 328 kills, 99 aces, and 41 blocks. Thomson’s hitting percentage is .509, a noteworthy achievement at this level of play.
“Avery is as complete a player as I have ever coached, and that includes a lot of athletes in the past 15 years of my coaching career. She is super competitive and has a high volleyball IQ,” said Lonnie Wheeler, MDS volleyball head coach.
As a team captain, Thomson helped lead the Lady Cavaliers to a 32-8 overall record—thirty-two wins is a record high for the program, which started in 2011. The team went 5-0 in the region. The Lady Cavaliers also claimed their fourth straight area championship in October, shutting out Stratford and Brookstone 2-0 and 3-0, respectively.
Thomson’s dedication to the sport and performance on the court are evident in her outstanding volleyball career both at Mount de Sales and with her club team, A5 South.
