Mr. David Held has named Kenny Epps (2004), head girls soccer coach, as Athletic Director starting July 1. Coach Epps, who teaches in the Upper School history department, also has served as an assistant coach for the girls and boys basketball teams, off-season strength and conditioning coach, and site supervisor for Cavalier Fields during his five-year tenure at MDS.
The Cavalier athletic program is close to Coach Epps’ heart as he grew up watching his older siblings – Mychal (’93), Tamara (’96), and Jamal (2000) – compete. “My father also grew up with Coach Robert Slocum (’74), and I watched Keith Hatcher (’96) play for him, so it is a special opportunity for me to follow in their footsteps and build upon their leadership of our athletic program,” said Coach Epps.
Participating in athletics was an integral part of Coach Epps’ development, and he understands that a strong athletic program is essential to developing the whole individual. “As a teacher, I know the emphasis Mount de Sales puts on academic excellence,” noted Coach Epps. “We can maintain that same level of excellence in our athletic program, which provides opportunities to teach important life lessons.”
Coach Epps is looking forward to working with the administration, advancement team, and coaching staff to capitalize on the positive momentum in Cavalier athletics including a softball state championship, the first since MDS returned to the GHSA in 2014. “Mount de Sales has had a winning tradition, and my goal is not just to build on that legacy, but to instill a championship mentality throughout our program.”
